View this post on Instagram Beaver Lake Cree Nation is taking on the tar sands – Canada’s fastest growing source of #climate pollution. Tar sands extraction has poisoned water, eliminated whole forests, and decimated traditional food sources for the Beaver Lake Cree people. But now, this historic legal action is in jeopardy. Having successfully proven that the Tar Sands Trial is in the public interest, the court mandated that Canada and Alberta provide Beaver Lake Cree with an Advance Cost award of $600k towards the cost of taking this important case to trial. Outrageously, the government appealed that award decision, and now, in the middle of a pandemic, the BLCN are now being forced to dig into their community coffers so they can prove they are indeed entitled to receive Advance Costs. * The Beaver Lake Cree Nation is heading back to court on June 4th to defend their treaty rights.
